When a loved one dies it is a very distressing and emotional experience, especially if you are responsible for making all the arrangements. It is an experience that will not get any easier, no matter how often you have been in that position. If you choose to make your own plans you have the opportunity to have your wishes carried out precisely. You can make as many of the decisions or as little as you want.
